I blinked and six months have gone by without a single post. It truly felt like a blink.
Meanwhile, I have set the basis for two personal businesses and organized the TEDx events. These events are the first in a series I have named TEDxDUCTAC – to relate it to the Dubai Community Theater & Arts Center, which kindly allowed me to use an amazing studio for free once per month. The events are captured on video with the kind support of Icon Arts Production.
TEDxDUCTAC is a series of monthly events organized with the aim to create a place where Dubai residents that are passionate about the pursuit of knowledge can meet each other and be inspired. While the series has an underlying motif – to make visible that which is obscured by our certain ways of perceiving, interpreting, and representing the world around us – each monthly event will showcase a different theme. I want the event to be part of the local texture, so I relate all themes to meaningful events taking place in Dubai and I give priority to speakers and performers that are residents of Dubai.
The January TEDx was focused on Technology (T), the February event was focused on Entertainment (E) and the March event will be focused on Design (D). Starting with April, I will pursue the goal of making this series of events into a self-propagating organization – the events will occur with minimum guidance on my part, based on the efforts of a pool of local volunteers and speakers /lecturers/ performers.
As a measure of success, we aim to feature the February event performance video on TV – Dubai One. If that happens, I will post here a link to the video.
TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it “the ultimate brain spa” and “a four-day journey into the future.” The diverse audience — CEOs, scientists, creatives, philanthropists — is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck and Bono.
TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share ideas worth spreading. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks videos and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
