I have often wondered why developers of master planned communities do not purposefully leave a few sites vacant and a few buildings unfinished.
Two benefits would be achieved.
A psychological benefit: just as nature seeks to fill a void, so might the residents be inspired by the unfinished spaces and aspire to create something to complete their environment; this is an opportunity to create both inspiration and aspiration by the very act of not acting.
A practical benefit: instead of trying to divine the preferences of future residents, why not create conditions for themselves to develop something that reflects their needs and interests?; this is an opportunity to enable actions that create a sense of belonging and strengthen a community.
